Most of you are aware of my new work with the Holtorf Medical Group in Foster City, CA. I am privileged to help women and men balance their hormones and feel like themselves again. As part of my job now I have frequent opportunities to be interviewed for online journal articles, as well as other media appearances. Most recently, an article I was interviewed for on the topic of “8 Surprising Sweat Triggers” was syndicated from iVillage to the Huffington Post! I usually discuss sweating in the context of hormonal changes, such as with menopause, but here is some great information in a much broader context. Click here to read the article and see the fun images they posted with the slide show.

NEWS THAT NEVER MADE BIG HEADLINES

Data analysis from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Study, first reported in 2002, just keeps coming, even though the study results are not applicable to most women nowadays due to the women studied and the hormones that were used. The biggest finding that you never heard about was that the women only on estrogen (Premarin) had LESS BREAST CANCER!

If you’ve heard me speak on the topic of the WHI Study, or read about it in my book, you know that (1) the women in the study were the “wrong” women (on average had gone through menopause 10 or more years before, and were not having any menopause-related symptoms), (2) the hormones used were the “wrong” hormones (non-bioidentical estrogen from horses and synthetic progestin) and (3) the “wrong” route of administration was used (oral estrogen increases cardiovascular risks while transdermal does not). Nonetheless, most U.S. doctors don’t know these details, and have yanked women off of their hormone therapy and/or have not been willing to start hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women who are suffering with menopausal symptoms.

The good news is that doctors are starting to pay attention to what has been in front of us for many years: the women in the estrogen-only arm of the study (they had had hysterectomies so were not given progestin) had LESS BREAST CANCER! A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical ASssociation (JAMA) reviewed long-term findings in this group, and confirmed:

“One of the key findings was that estrogen-alone therapy was associated with a significant reduction in risk for invasive breast cancer. The findings were similar during the active treatment period and the post-stopping period: overall, about a 23% reduction in risk for breast cancer.”

Several large studies (with a total of over 100,000 women) in the U.S. and Europe have confirmed that it is NOT the estrogen, but rather the long-term use of the non-bioidentical progestin MPA (medroxyprogesterone acetate) that is associated with an increased risk of invasive breast cancer. MPA is useful in many circumstances, but for long-term HRT in menopause, it is not the safest choice.

Click here for a short article or here for a comprehensive article by Dr. Kent Holtorf on the safety of bioidentical hormone therapy. A woman has to feel good to live her best life possible! Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may be just what the doctor ordered so she can feel her best.

This article is taking on a life of its own: I wrote it recently for Woman’s Day online magazine, and it has gotten picked up by NBC’s iVillage, and led to a really fun interview today on the Playboy radio station on Sirius XM. Enjoy!

Six reasons why sex is good for our health and keeps us feeling young:

1. Libido is life energy. The word “libido” does not just refer to sex. If you look in the dictionary, “libido” refers to “positive life energy”. Libido is often a reflection of a person’s feelings of motivation, confidence, and “mojo”. So, if a person’s libido is low, it is worth evaluating further and doing something to improve it.

2. Sex protects our health. For both men and women, studies show that sexual activity has a protective effect on our health. In men, studies have shown a 50% decrease in the risk of cardiovascular mortality in men having frequent sex, as compared to the men in the study having the least frequency of sex. Studies also confirm similar findings in women, especially regarding orgasms.

3. Erectile function is a good indicator of overall cardiovascular health in men. The same things that damage the blood vessels of the heart can damage the penile blood vessels. In a report from 2005, a panel of experts made a recommendation that all men 25 years old or older should be asked about erectile dysfunction, regardless of whether they mention it to their doctors, because it is an early marker for cardiovascular disease.

4. Oxytocin is good for us. Sexual activity, and especially orgasm, causes the release of the hormone oxytocin, that gives all sorts of health benefits: mood enhancement, lower cortisol, lower blood pressure, glowing skin, and possibly even protection against several hormone-mediated cancers.

5. Sex improves your blood flow. Healthy sexual encounters cause dilation of blood vessels all over the body, which in turn improves blood flow to many body organs including the brain. Blood flow brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells, and improves the health of these organs.

6. Sex reduces stress. Research started by Kinsey in the 1940′s shows that people with fulfilling sex lives experience less anxiety and tend to be less violent or hostile. Sex causes the release of oxytocin, endorphins, and dopamine, all of which are hormones that increase positive feelings of attachment, affection and closeness.

First, thank you for all the support and encouragement you are expressing to me and my staff – we really appreciate it.

Second, many of you are appropriately concerned about how to proceed regarding your medical records. I want to cover a few points. Please read ALL of the following carefully, as it will answer many of your questions:

POINT #1. ALL YOUR RECORDS ARE SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE.

If I took care of you prior to January 1, 2010 (last year), then the physical (paper) chart I had on you is in the safe keeping and legal possession of Dr. Mehrnaz Nicole Jamali in Aliso Viejo.

You are the legal owner of your health information; Dr. Jamali is the legal owner of your physical records, and to my knowledge (I am not a lawyer) she is legally entitled to collect a fee to provide you with a copy of your health information. To my knowledge she is charging $50 for providing you or another doctor with your health records.

Nearly all visits from November of 2008 through April 2010 (about a year and a half) are in my electronic health record (EHR) system, and I will be happy to FAX these notes from our visits to you at no charge (or to make them available for you to pick up in Ladera Ranch). For the most part, I do not have copies of lab results in my EHR system; if needed, lab results are not difficult for you to obtain directly from the lab used (primarily Whitefield Lab and Mission Hospital Laguna Beach lab, although a few other labs may have been used by some of you who took the lab requisition and went to a lab closer to you).

There is no time limit here; I will continue my EHR system, and continue to be available to you while you transition your care. I will also continue to care for you via secure email through www.PatientAlly.com. Instructions will be coming soon on how to connect with me through this feature of my EHR system – there is NO COST TO YOU to activate this connection.

POINT #2. IN MOST CASES, YOU DO NOT NEED A COPY OF YOUR HEALTH RECORDS.

If I took care of you mainly for routine gynecologic care, then you most likely do not need your records in order to continue your care.

I recommend that you establish care with the doctor of your choice (I will be posting a list as soon as possible with names and numbers of the doctors I have been referring to over the past few years), and then WHEN YOU GO FOR AN APPOINTMENT, ask that doctor if they need any of your past records.

If you saw Dr. James Carter in the past, Dr. Red Alinsod is the owner of those physical charts. Again, I cannot see a situation in which those records would change the care that a current doctor would provide for you, so I do not recommend that you obtain these charts unless requested by one of your doctors. If you feel strongly that you want a copy of a chart from Dr. Carter’s practice, please feel free to contact Dr. Alinsod’s office.

I hope this answers the most urgent question I have received so far, and I will continue to update you on how to smoothly transition your care to the appropriate doctor(s).

Sincerely,

Dr. Liz Lyster

I’m looking forward to being interviewed tomorrow

on Dr. Sanda Haymon’s BlogTalkRadio show

MONDAY, JANUARY 3RD, at 9:00 am PST.

Are you often moody, irritable, and impatient with those you love? Do you sometimes feel like you’re ‘losing it?’Do you laughingly say you’re having a ‘hormonal moment’yet know those’moments’ are all too frequent? Do you get enough sleep, yet never feel rested?Do you often have difficulty just dragging through the day? Do you ever have hot flashes or night sweats? Have you ever wondered what symptoms are considered ‘normal’ during perimenopause and menopause, and whether women just have to ‘tolerate’ feeling bad during midlife? Do you look into the mirror and wonder what’s going on with your body? Are you eating less and exercising more yet still gaining weight!? Would you like to know if there’s anything that could alleviate those uncomfortable symptoms? Have you ever thought about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but have heard too many scary stories? Have you heard the term ‘Bioidentical Hormone Therapy,’ but aren’t quite sure what that includes, or how it’s different from Hormone Replacement Therapy? Would you like the answers to these and other questions? Would you like an ‘easy guide’ that provides answers to questions about the changes your body goes through and teaches you how to manage your emotions as well as your physical body during this during phase in life? If so, you will want to hear every word of this episode. My special guest, Doctor Liz Lyster is a gynecologist and ‘Women’s Midlife Health Expert.’ Her mission is to help women in midlife balance their hormones, lose weight, and regain health and balance in their lives. Dr. Liz’s ‘Easy Guide to Menopause: 5 Simple Steps to Balancing Your Hormones and Feeling Like Yourself Again’ offers solutions for perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms. Through her compassionate patient care, humorous writings, and medical expertise, Doctor Liz helps thousands of women successfully navigate this passage in life.
